What Is Qaza Namaz? (Ada and Qaza)

Is Qaza Namaz Obligatory?
Making up a missed fard prayer is obligatory, agreed upon by all four schools of Islamic law. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, let him pray it when he remembers it.” (Bukhari and Muslim). If a prayer was left on purpose, sincere repentance (tawbah) is needed as well — but repentance alone does not remove the duty to make the prayer up.
How to Pray Qaza Namaz (Method and Niyyah)
Pray qaza the same way as the original fard — same rakats, same recitation, same actions. Only the intention changes: intend in your heart the specific missed prayer, for example, “I make up today’s Fajr, for Allah.” The niyyah is made silently in the heart and does not need to be spoken aloud. Make wudu, face the qibla, and pray as you normally would.

When Does Fajr Become Qaza?
Fajr becomes qaza the moment the sun rises. Once the sun’s upper edge appears, the Fajr window has closed and the prayer is now made up as qaza. If you wake after sunrise, wait about 15–20 minutes until the sun has fully risen — praying exactly at the point of sunrise is not allowed — then pray it. Forbidden Times — When Not to Pray Qaza
Qaza is not offered during three short periods: at sunrise, at zawal (when the sun stands directly overhead near midday), and during sunset. Outside these three moments, qaza may be prayed at any time — including after Fajr and after Asr, when only voluntary prayers are disliked, not obligatory make-ups.

If you owe fewer than six prayers, the Hanafi school requires you to make them up in order — earlier missed prayers before later ones. Once six or more prayers are owed, keeping this order is no longer required, which removes the hardship for anyone carrying many missed prayers.
How to Calculate Years of Missed Prayers
Count from when prayer first became obligatory on you — the age of puberty — until you began praying regularly. Multiply the number of missed days by 20 rakats. As an example, one missed year is roughly 365 × 20 = 7,300 rakats. Write the total down and treat it as a debt to be cleared steadily, without despair.

Do Women Make Up Prayers Missed During Menstruation?
No. Prayers missed during menstruation (haid) or postnatal bleeding (nifas) are not made up — this is agreed by all scholars. Fasts missed on those days are repaid later, but the prayers are not.
